How to Print and Scan with One Device
Modern technology has allowed for many common computer add-ons to be combined into a single one. Originally, computer printers and scanners were large, bulky items that had to be plugged in separately and in distinct locations. Now it is very common to find an “All-In-One” printer, which has scanning and printing functions included. Some are even so small they can be considered a portable printer scanner! This also allows it to be a copier in many cases, since it can scan and print a copy of an image without the assistance of the computer which it is plugged in to. Some of these devices can even function as a fax machine; however, this is being phased out as fax technology is replaced by digital communications.
There are many ways in which one can print and scan from the same device, but this is usually limited by the design and the software of the device itself. Many such devices have a single “Copy” button that allows for the machine to scan and print a copy of a sheet of paper without the use of the computer. This is particularly prevalent within portable printer scanner models. However, most scanning and printing occurs using the computer that the device is attached to.
To print and scan from the same device generally means installing only a single device, but using separate pieces of software to print and to scan. Many operating systems are designed to see printers and scanners as separate machines, since originally they always were. Fortunately, most printers come with software, which permits the computer to know that both functions are tied to the machine. The software may even include the ability to scan with the device at a few clicks, although it is possible to install other software to access the device once the proper drivers have been installed. In any case, it is necessary to install the device and then access it using the software installed on the PC. Most graphical programs have the ability to access the device’s scanning function and scan directly into the program, and almost every program can print from an installed printer.
