Cooking Quinoa is Easy and Good for You!

without comments

In an unhealthy world, most of us try to make healthy changes when we can.  A great change that you can make to your diet is to start cooking quinoa.  The best part?  Quinoa is delicious and so you can improve your health without sacrificing taste!

Most people think of quinoa as a grain, but it is actually an ancient seed.  It is treated much like a grain in cooking.  In fact, you can substitute quinoa for most any grain including rice, couscous and oatmeal.    This means that you can enjoy quinoa at any meal of the day!

Quinoa provides a wide array of vitamins and minerals, including magnesium and potassium.  Additionally, it is very high in protein.  In fact, it is the only “grain” that is considered to be a complete source of protein.  Unlike other grains, it provides all of the amino acids that are essential to your health.  The fact that quinoa has lysine makes it a great choice for vegetarians because it is one of the few non-meat sources of lysine to be found.

But, quinoa is not just for vegetarians!  Because it provides slow burning carbohydrates, quinoa is also a great nutritional choice for people who are dieting or for diabetics who are trying to control their blood sugar.  One of my favorite quinoa recipes combines quinoa with turkey sausage, garlic, sun-dried tomatoes and cilantro.  It is not only healthy, but so tasty that even my fussy pre-schooler’s cheer when they find out that is what we are having for dinner.  For another dish that is great for kids, try substituting quinoa for pasta in your favorite macaroni and cheese recipe.

If you are working towards a healthier diet, try adding quinoa to your meal plans a few times a week.  It is easy to fix and one of the healthiest foods that you can find!
