The name “First” says it all: it was the first fragrance created by the French jewellery house Van Cleef & Arpels, founded  in 1906. It was actually the first perfume to be produced by a jewellery house, 5 years before the Must de Cartier. The perfume is a classic from the seventies, with a mix of aldehydes and high quantities of florals. In spite of that, the result is a quite fresh fragrance, although it is far from the levels of freshness of contemporary perfumes.

The opening notes are a complex mix of florals, yet not dense, and slightly aldehydes with an intense soapy aroma. It is the product of a mix of jasmine and other classy garden flowers, like carnation plus a neutral fruity note, which gives the sweet note to the soapy aroma. In particular, this juxtaposition of carnation and jasmine reminds of the great Eternity perfume, by Calvin Klein.
In the middle phase the structure of the notes does not change much (which is something quite unusual in any fragrance), but it gets fresher and fresher. Like many perfumes of the seventies, this First by Van Cleef & Arpels lasts for many hours on the skin. You will probably have to wait up to seven hours before noticing some change, and that is the signal that the final base notes have started. Again, there is not a huge change. The structure of soapy floral notes is still there with almost the same proportion, but it is sweeter thanks to the contribution of jasmine and hyacinth (very similar to the hyacinth in Acqua di Gio for men by Giorgio Armani) giving a fresh and clean support.
In spite of its opening, typical from the seventies, the middle and the base notes are more classic, suitable for a daily use in the office, where it smells very feminine and relaxed.
