Insect Infested Tree Removal
Although trees serve both an aesthetic and functional purpose, overtime they can begin to attract problems that can be costly to repair. For instance, growing tree roots are often blamed for damaged cement slabs and sewer lines. Furthermore, a tree may be excreting substances like sap that can harm paint finishes on automobiles and various other belongings. The tree removal cost in most areas isn’t particularly unreasonable, so there’s no reason to postpone addressing these issues.
Perhaps one of the most downplayed problems that a homeowner can experience with the trees on their property is insect infestation. This is typically difficult to detect as only subtle signs emerge when insects begin to attack a tree.
The leaves on the tree may appear discolored, or the bark may be flaking off a bit too easily. For all the owner knows, this may be normal behavior for the tree. Boring insects are the biggest threat to plants and consist of bugs like the longhorn beetle and termites.
These essentially tunnel through the tree to make room for their eggs and to also steal nutrients. In some cases, infestation is so severe that the actual structure of the tree may be susceptible to giving way, in which case the homeowner will have to hire an arborist to remove it and pay the cost of tree stump grinding to eliminate the possibility that any termites or similar remain.
Only an arborist can determine what type of action needs to be taken to remedy the problem. If the infestation has been going on for some time, it may be difficult to keep the parasites from further reproducing and wreaking even more havoc. Remember that a frail tree can cause significant damage if its limbs crack or the entire trees collapses. So, instead of trying to rescue the diseased tree, you might be better off having it removed.
Depending on the size of the tree, a landscaper may charge you anywhere from a few hundred dollars up to $1,000 for a particularly large tree. If you are comfortable with tackling projects yourself, you can always ask the contractor to leave behind the stump as well as the roots for you to take care of yourself. It’s probably not the best of ideas to recycle any of the wood for the fireplace or any other internal use.
You are strongly advised against trying to take down a sick tree yourself. They are far too unpredictable in terms of structural solidity to be tinkered with by anyone who is not a competent professional. Although you can opt to have these trees removed at any time during the year, winter tends to be the preferred season.
Insect activity will be minimal and therefore the tree can be removed with very little hassle. The longer you wait, the higher the likelihood that the tree might cause some form of damage to your property, so the sooner you can act the better off you will be.
Signs of Termite Activity
Most people do not know that there are a few different type of termites. In the Unites States the most common type of termite is the Subterranean termite. This type of termite is commonly known for doing all kinds of damage to your home.
You may have termites and not know it for awhile because they work slowly doing the damage.
Some signs you can look for are dark spots in your wood that you can scratch off easily, Wood that looks like it is rotting out, Wood that sounds hollow inside when you knock on it. You can even check the trees around your house and look for damage and if they are there then it is likely they are also in your home.
You should also be on the alert for mud tubes, this looks like a tube made of dirt and usually the size of a pencil, this is a tunnel for them to travel from their underground colony to your house. If you see something that looks like one of these tubes then open it and see if it has any termites in it.
If you see any structural damage to any of your walls or it looks like moist areas on your wall then you may have termites. It is also a good idea to check your basement and attic for any of these signs. The Subterranean termite has a antennae that point outward and they are jet black with white colored wings. If you see any of these signs you may want to call an exterminator, most will come and do a free inspection. If it is proven that you do have termites make sure you also have your yard treated as well as your house to prevent any termites from making it back to your home.
